While most safari experiences in Tanzania take place during the day, the real magic happens when the sun goes down. The Night Game Drive, conducted between 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM, offers a thrilling and unforgettable opportunity to explore the African wilderness after dark—a time when many elusive and fascinating creatures become active.
This unique adventure takes you into the heart of Tanzania's iconic landscapes, where you'll witness nature’s secrets under the cover of darkness. Whether you're exploring the woodlands of Lake Manyara, the floodplains of Tarangire, etc or the hidden corners of private conservancies, the Night Game Drive is a must-do for any safari enthusiast.
A Night Game Drive is a guided safari conducted after sunset using a 4x4 safari vehicle equipped with high-powered spotlights. Led by professional guides and trackers, these drives allow you to observe nocturnal animals and behaviors that are rarely seen during the day.
While most national parks in Tanzania close at dusk, select areas and private reserves have special permits to allow night game drives. This makes the experience even more exclusive and exciting.
Although night drives are not allowed in all Tanzanian parks, several key locations offer this unique activity:
Nyerere National Park – As one of Africa’s largest and most pristine wilderness areas, Nyerere offers a rich and remote setting for night game drives. The park’s vast river systems, dense woodlands, and open plains provide ideal habitats for nocturnal predators like leopards, hyenas, and lions, making night drives here both unpredictable and exhilarating.
Lake Manyara National Park – Famous for tree-climbing lions and rich birdlife, Manyara also provides one of the best night game drive experiences in Tanzania.
Tarangire National Park – Known for its massive elephant herds and baobab trees, Tarangire's diverse wildlife makes night drives especially rewarding.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Selected Lodges) – Some lodges within the conservation area offer night drives on their private concessions.
Private Game Reserves and Conservancies – Areas around Serengeti and other parks often offer night drives for their guests.
Tanzania's bush comes alive at night. Animals you're likely to spot include:
Leopards stalking prey
Hyenas in search of a meal
Civets, genets, porcupines, and bush babies
Owls and other nocturnal birds
These sightings are extremely rare during the day, making a night game drive a special addition to your safari.
There is something truly surreal about being in the wild after dark. With the moon overhead, stars lighting up the sky, and the occasional roar or rustle in the bushes, every moment feels like you're part of a live wildlife documentary.
Night photography offers dramatic, low-light compositions you can’t capture during the day—whether it’s the glowing eyes of a predator or the silhouette of an elephant under the stars.
