Londorossi Gate

Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp

Main Destination
Londorossi Gate
Meals Plan
Lunch, Dinner, Bottled Water

Today's Experience

Distance: Approximately 4.8 km | Hiking time: 3–4 hours Elevation: 2,389 m to 2,785 m Landscape: Tropical rainforest Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a morning departure from Moshi, followed by a scenic drive of approximately three hours through the countryside to Londorossi Gate on the western slopes of the mountain. After registration and the completion of park formalities, meet your mountain crew and begin your first trek into the wilderness. The trail winds beneath a dense canopy of ancient trees, where moss-covered branches, ferns, and the sounds of the forest create a peaceful introduction to the climb. Keep an eye out for colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and colourful forest birds. Your guide will introduce you to the mountain's unique ecosystem while helping you settle into a comfortable walking rhythm. The path can be muddy and slippery, particularly after rain, so suitable hiking boots and trekking poles are recommended. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp, where your crew will have prepared your evening meal. Enjoy your first night surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

Shira Plateau

Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira I Camp

Main Destination
Shira Plateau
Meals Plan
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Bottled Water

Today's Experience

Distance: Approximately 7–8 km | Hiking time: 5–6 hours Elevation: 2,785 m to 3,505 m Landscape: Rainforest, heathland, and moorland After breakfast, leave the dense forest behind as the trail gradually climbs into the open heath and moorland zone. The scenery changes noticeably as tall trees give way to giant heathers, shrubs, and hardy alpine vegetation. The route becomes more exposed, revealing increasingly impressive views across the western slopes of Kilimanjaro. On clear days, the surrounding plains stretch far into the distance, offering a striking contrast to the mountain's rugged terrain. Your guide will maintain a steady pace, allowing you to conserve energy and begin adjusting to the thinner air. Regular water breaks and a relaxed walking rhythm are important as the elevation increases. Continue toward Shira I Camp, positioned near the western edge of the Shira Plateau. As evening approaches, enjoy the open mountain scenery and the cooler high-altitude atmosphere. Overnight: Shira I Camp

Day 03

Barranco Valley

Shira I Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Main Destination
Barranco Valley
Meals Plan
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Bottled Water

Today's Experience

Distance: Approximately 10–12 km | Hiking time: 6–8 hours Highest point: Approximately 4,630 m Overnight elevation: Approximately 3,960 m Landscape: High-altitude moorland and alpine desert Today's trek is one of the most important stages of your acclimatization journey. After breakfast, cross the spectacular Shira Plateau, a vast high-altitude landscape formed by ancient volcanic activity. The trail gradually ascends toward the eastern side of the plateau, offering panoramic views of Kibo's rugged slopes and the surrounding volcanic terrain. As you gain elevation, vegetation becomes increasingly sparse and the landscape takes on a dramatic, almost lunar appearance. Continue toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation rising above the trail. Reaching this area provides an opportunity to experience a much higher altitude before descending to sleep at a lower elevation. After a break at Lava Tower, begin the descent toward Barranco Valley. The route passes through fascinating alpine terrain, including unusual giant groundsels and lobelias that thrive in Kilimanjaro's harsh environment. As you approach Barranco Camp, the towering Barranco Wall comes into view, creating an impressive backdrop for the evening. Although you finish the day at a similar elevation to the previous night's camp, the higher ascent followed by descent is an important part of your acclimatization strategy.

Karanga Valley

Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

Main Destination
Karanga Valley
Meals Plan
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Bottled Water

Today's Experience

Distance: Approximately 5–6 km | Hiking time: 4–5 hours Elevation: Approximately 3,960 m to 4,035 m Landscape: Rocky ridges and alpine desert Wake to spectacular views of the mountain and prepare for one of the most memorable sections of the Lemosho Route: the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. After breakfast, begin climbing the steep rock face using established sections of the trail. Although it looks intimidating from camp, the route is manageable for many trekkers when approached carefully, with guidance from your mountain crew. Some sections require the use of your hands for balance. From higher points along the wall, enjoy sweeping views across the valley and toward the glaciers above. Take your time, follow your guide's instructions, and pause to appreciate the dramatic scenery. Beyond the wall, the trail traverses a series of ridges and valleys before descending slightly and climbing again toward Karanga Valley. The changing terrain provides a varied hiking experience while continuing your gradual adjustment to altitude. Arrive at Karanga Camp in the afternoon. Enjoy a warm meal, rest your legs, and take in the remarkable views before another night on the mountain.

Barafu Camp

Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

Main Destination
Barafu Camp
Meals Plan
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Bottled Water

Today's Experience

Distance: Approximately 4 km | Hiking time: 3–4 hours Elevation: Approximately 4,035 m to 4,640 m Landscape: High-altitude alpine desert After breakfast, continue toward Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit attempt. The trail climbs steadily through exposed alpine terrain, where vegetation is scarce and the mountain's volcanic character becomes increasingly apparent. As you gain elevation, the views open toward Kibo and the surrounding mountain slopes. The sense of anticipation builds as you approach the camp from which you will begin your final ascent. On arrival, your guide will explain the summit-night plan and check that your clothing, headlamp, water, and essential equipment are ready. You will have time to rest, hydrate, and eat an early dinner before attempting to sleep. Because the summit climb begins around midnight, conserving your energy is essential. Your guide will also review the importance of a slow pace and monitoring how you feel at altitude. Settle in early and prepare mentally for the most demanding and rewarding stage of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Day 06

Uhuru Peak / Mweka Camp

Summit Day – Barafu to Mweka

Main Destination
Uhuru Peak / Mweka Camp
Meals Plan
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Bottled Water

Today's Experience

Distance: Approximately 5 km ascent and 11–12 km descent Hiking time: 10–14 hours in total, depending on conditions Elevation: Approximately 4,640 m to 5,895 m, then down to around 3,100 m Landscape: Volcanic scree, glaciers, snow, and high-altitude wilderness The summit attempt begins shortly after midnight. Layer up against the cold, switch on your headlamp, and follow your guide into the darkness as the climb toward Africa's highest point begins. The ascent is slow and demanding. Step by step, the trail winds across steep volcanic scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The combination of cold temperatures, darkness, and thin air makes this the most physically and mentally challenging part of the expedition. As dawn approaches, the horizon gradually brightens, revealing the mountain's spectacular high-altitude landscape. Depending on conditions and your progress, you may witness sunrise from near Stella Point or farther along the summit trail. From Stella Point, continue toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level. The final stretch may pass through snow, depending on the season and prevailing conditions. Take time for summit photographs and to appreciate the extraordinary achievement of standing above the African continent. Weather and altitude can limit the time spent at the summit, so follow your guide's instructions before beginning the descent. Retrace your route toward Barafu Camp for a short rest and refreshments. Continue down the mountain along the Mweka Trail, passing through increasingly lower terrain toward Mweka Camp. The descent is long and can be tough on tired legs, particularly on loose volcanic gravel. Trekking poles and careful footing are strongly recommended. Arrive at Mweka Camp for a well-earned meal and your final night on Kilimanjaro, reflecting on the journey that has taken you from rainforest to the roof of Africa.

Day 07

Moshi

Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi

Main Destination
Moshi
Meals Plan
Breakfast, Lunch, Bottled Water

Today's Experience

Distance: Approximately 9–10 km | Hiking time: 3–4 hours Elevation: Approximately 3,100 m to 1,640 m Landscape: Montane rainforest Enjoy your final breakfast on the mountain before beginning the descent through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The atmosphere changes once again as the cool alpine environment gives way to warmer air, thick vegetation, and the familiar sounds of the forest. The trail can be damp, muddy, and slippery, so continue walking carefully. At Mweka Gate, complete the park exit formalities and receive your summit certificate if you successfully reached the summit. Take time to thank your guides, cook, and porters, whose teamwork and support helped make the expedition possible. Your vehicle will meet you for the transfer back to your hotel in Moshi, where a hot shower, a comfortable bed, and a celebratory meal await. Your seven-day Kilimanjaro journey ends here, leaving you with lasting memories of the landscapes, challenges, and achievement of climbing Africa's highest mountain. RESPONSIBLE AND ETHICAL MOUNTAIN CLIMBING A successful Kilimanjaro expedition depends on the dedication of the entire mountain crew. Responsible climbing means respecting the natural environment and ensuring that guides, cooks, and porters are treated fairly throughout the journey. We support environmentally responsible trekking practices, proper crew equipment and sleeping arrangements, fair wages, and appropriate food provisions. We also encourage respectful interactions with local communities and responsible waste management on the mountain. By choosing an ethical climb, you contribute to protecting Kilimanjaro's fragile ecosystems while supporting the people who make these adventures possible.
